The Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) approved expenditures of $51.83 million for 25 projects at its meeting on February 16, 2023.

Additionally, WCB elected its first public chair and first woman chair in the Board's 75-year history. Public Member, Alina Bokde, will serve as Chair for 2023. Chuck Bonham was elected Vice-Chair.

WCB also updated its appraisal policy (PDF).

The Board's next meeting is May 25, 2023 at the California Natural Resources Headquarters Building beginning at 10:00 a.m. and will also be available via Zoom.

WCB is looking for a Senior Environmental Scientist to manage the Forest Conservation and Oak Woodlands Conservation programs. The position will play a key role in developing and managing grants throughout the state’s forest and oak woodland habitats. Project management responsibilities include: project consultation with federal, state and local partners, development and review of funding and grant proposals, negotiation of terms and conditions for project agreements, contract and grant administration, planning, design review, and implementation oversight. Projects may include habitat restoration or wildlife-oriented public access projects. The Senior Environmental Scientist will also participate as a member of the Development and Restoration Team by reviewing proposals and managing projects under the WCB's other Restoration and Development programs. Open until February 23, 2023.

WCB is looking for an Attorney I to work as a part of WCB’s legal team. The position will advise WCB on a variety of legal issues including reviewing documents related to real property transactions, grants and management, including conservation easements, acquisition agreements, and easements, and California Environmental Quality Act compliance; providing other legal guidance to WCB Executive and staff including attending Board meetings and communicating with WCB and CDFW staff regarding legal matters and commenting on proposed legislation; and attending and participating in meetings of the Lower American River Conservancy Advisory Committee. Open until March 1, 2023.

Our 2022 Year in Review (PDF) has been posted that highlights nearly $162 million in grants for 91 projects. The report also highlights some key projects and shows how we met and exceeded our Strategic Plan objectives. We couldn't have done it without you! We are looking forward to another amazing year of conservation as we collectively continue to meet 30 X 30 goals in 2023.

As of January 26, 2023, the Wildlife Conservation Board will be using a revised version of its General Grant Guidelines which were originally posted in March 2022. It is available on WCB’s Grant Opportunities page. These revisions are generally minor, the most substantive of which are summarized below:

  • The indirect rate has been changed to a maximum rate of 15 percent on the entire WCB grant award amount, or for tribes or pass-through grants with an approved Federal Indirect Cost Rate
  • Updated to include General Fund allocations for FY 22-23
  • Removed Appendix for Supplemental Information for Stream Flow Enhancement Projects
  • Clarification on when Letters of Support are required from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife

WCB is looking for its first ever Information Officer I (Specialist) to coordinate outreach and communications with the public, officials, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders. The position will play a key role in communicating the activities, objectives and priorities of WCB and in highlighting successes and equitably identifying opportunities to work with WCB. Experience with CA Native American Tribes is also of interest. Open until filled.
